A tablet on the host stand or behind the bar is a handy way to run your diary. On an iPad or an Android tablet you use the NomNom app — the same free app as on a phone, with the same diary, bookings and guests. NomNom Web, the browser version, doesn’t open on tablets: see Why can’t I open NomNom Web on my phone or iPad?.
Set up a tablet
1. Install the app. Search for NomNom in the App Store on an iPad, or on Google Play on an Android tablet.
2. Get an access code. An admin opens People & Access, clicks the person the tablet will sign in as (see the next section), and clicks New code next to Devices. If that person works at more than one venue, you’ll be asked Which venue is this device for? The code lasts 48 hours. Other ways to get a code are in Signing in on another device.
In NomNom Web: account menu → People & Access → click a person → Devices → New code. In the phone app: Settings → People & Access → tap a person → Devices → New code.
3. Sign the tablet in. Open the app, tap Already have an account? and type the 6-digit code. The tablet opens on your diary. Don’t tap Get Started: that sets up a brand-new restaurant.
Whose code to use on a shared tablet
A tablet is signed in as the person whose code you used, and can do whatever their role allows (see What Admin, Standard and Read-only staff can do). For a tablet the whole team picks up:
- Use a Standard person, not an admin. Staff can take, change and cancel bookings on it, but can’t open Configuration or change your venue’s settings. Admins make those changes in NomNom Web or on their own phone.
- Consider a person just for the tablet. In People & Access, click Add person and create one called, say, Front desk, with the Standard role. The email address is optional.
- Switching that person off signs the tablet out. If you set the tablet up with a member of staff’s code and switch them off when they leave, the tablet is signed out too — another reason to give it its own person.
- Still want to know who took each booking? Ask for a PIN when a booking is saved, so each person enters their own: see Requiring a PIN before staff save a booking and Recording who took a booking: Taken by.
On the host stand
- It works like the phone app. List, Chart and Plan along the top, the + button for New Reservation and Walk-in, and the menu for everything else. See Taking a booking over the phone.
- Stand it upright. The app is laid out for a phone held upright, so a stand that holds the tablet in portrait suits it best.
- Keep the screen awake. The app doesn’t stop the tablet going to sleep, so lengthen the screen timeout in the tablet’s own settings.
- It stays signed in. The app doesn’t time out the way NomNom Web does. If it ever says Reconnecting to NomNom..., just wait: see Why has my phone been signed out, or says "Reconnecting to NomNom"?.
Good to know
- Windows tablets count as computers. A tablet that runs Windows opens NomNom Web like any laptop.
- A few setup screens are NomNom Web only, such as different turn lengths on certain days. The help article for each one says so.
- Lost or replaced a tablet? An admin can sign it out from the person’s Devices list: click Sign out next to it. It then needs a new code to sign back in.
