Serving the same meal in more than one area

If Lunch runs in the Restaurant and on the Terrace, you set it up in each area under Meals. NomNom treats the two as the same meal because they share a name. Some settings belong to each area, and some are shared by every area with a meal of that name. Knowing which is which saves surprises when you change one.

Adding a meal another area already serves

1. Open Meals and pick the area. In NomNom Web, open Configuration, choose Meals and pick the area in the ROOM row.

2. Click Add meal. Under Copy from another area you’ll see the meals your other areas serve that this one doesn’t yet.

3. Click the meal. Hover over it to see where its settings come from, such as Copy from Restaurant. It’s added with the same settings, and you’ll see Added "Lunch", copied from Restaurant.

4. Change anything that should be different here — a shorter turn length on the Terrace, say.

The Add meal window for the Terrace, with Lunch and Dinner offered under Copy from another area

In NomNom Web: Configuration → Meals → pick the area → Add meal. In the phone app: Configuration → Meals → pick the area → Edit → Add Meal, then pick the meal marked Copy from and an area’s name.

If several areas already serve the meal, the settings come from the first of them in your Areas list. If you type the same name yourself instead, the meal starts with fresh settings but still shares the things listed below.

What each area sets for itself

Everything on the meal’s Details and Durations tabs belongs to that area alone, and a copy brings all of it over:

  • Bookable online and Don’t assign tables online
  • Online maximum guests, which counts that area’s guests only
  • Online booking cut-off and Minimum notice
  • turn lengths, including any different days
  • Confirmation email, Active from and Active until

What every area shares

  • Booking times. Every area serving the meal uses the shared All rooms (default) list under Times, unless you give an area its own list — see Different booking times for different rooms. Copying a meal doesn’t copy another area’s own list: the new area starts on the shared times.
  • Card and deposit rules. The meal’s Payments tab is shared, and a note on the tab says so. Change the deposit on the Terrace’s Lunch and the Restaurant’s Lunch changes too. See Setting up deposits and card requirements on a meal.
  • High chairs. If you’ve set how many you have, they’re counted across the whole meal that day, in every area.
  • MAX on the shared list. A time’s MAX on All rooms (default) counts everyone booked for that time, in every area.

Renaming a meal

Renaming a meal in one area renames it everywhere. The meal in every other area, all its booking times (including any area’s own list), its card and deposit rules, any schedule changes that mention it, and every booking already made for it, past and future, all move to the new name together. If another area serves the meal, NomNom asks Rename in every area? first; click Rename everywhere to go ahead.

So a rename can’t split one area off. You also can’t rename a meal to a name another meal already uses: you’ll see A meal with this name already exists.

In NomNom Web: Configuration → Meals → the rename button beside the meal. In the phone app: Configuration → Meals → Edit → the rename button.

Running one area’s version separately

If the Terrace’s lunch needs its own deposit, give it its own name. In the Terrace, add a new meal such as Terrace Lunch, set it up and add its times under Times, then delete Lunch from the Terrace. Deleting a meal removes it from that area only: the other areas carry on as before, and bookings already made keep their meal.

Good to know

  • Capital letters don’t make a new name. NomNom treats lunch and Lunch as the same meal, so you can’t have both. You can still fix the capitals: renaming lunch to Lunch saves as normal.
  • Adding it back. Delete a meal from an area and add it again later, and its times and deposit rules are still there.
