Can guests pay with a gift voucher when they book online?

No. Your booking page has nowhere to enter a voucher code, so a gift voucher can’t pay a deposit or hold a table online. Guests with a voucher book in the usual way and hand it over when they pay the bill. You redeem it then, and anything they don’t spend stays on it for next time (see Redeeming a gift voucher and spending part of it).

What to tell a guest with a voucher

  • Book as normal, online or by phone.
  • Bring the voucher, printed or on their phone, or just the 16-character code from their email.
  • A deposit is separate. If the meal asks for a deposit, they pay it by card when they book. It comes off the final bill, and the voucher can pay what’s left. A card held to secure the table isn’t charged unless they don’t turn up.
  • Say so in the notes. If your booking page has a Notes box, they can write that they’re paying with a voucher, so your team knows to expect it.

If they’d rather not pay a deposit by card

Take the booking for them yourself. Your card and deposit rules only apply to online bookings, so nothing stops you saving it. NomNom marks it Awaiting card as a reminder, which you can ignore for this guest. Their confirmation email will still ask them to add a card, so tell them they don’t need to. Add a note to the booking so the team knows why (see Taking a deposit for a booking made over the phone).

Good to know

  • The voucher link on your booking page is for buying. Gift Vouchers on the classic page, or Buying a gift? Gift vouchers → on the Discover-style page, opens your voucher shop. It isn’t a way to spend one (see Sharing your gift voucher page).
  • Payment links take cards only. A guest can’t pay a payment link with a voucher.
  • Vouchers and bookings aren’t linked. Redeeming a voucher doesn’t show on the booking’s Card & Payments tab or change its Total paid.
  • Put it in your voucher terms. A line such as Vouchers can’t be used to pay a deposit when booking online under TERMS & CONDITIONS in your voucher settings saves the question. It’s printed on every voucher.
