When a guest pays with a gift voucher, you look it up in NomNom, see what’s left on it and take off the amount of their bill. If the bill comes to less than the voucher, the rest stays on it for their next visit. Vouchers bought online and ones you’ve sold in person are redeemed in exactly the same way.
Redeem a voucher
1. Open Vouchers. In NomNom Web, click More (the three dots in the top bar) and choose Vouchers. It opens on the Redeem tab. In the phone app, open the menu and tap Vouchers; Redeem is the first tab.
2. Enter the code. Type the 16-character code from the guest’s voucher or email into Voucher code, then click Look up voucher. In the phone app only, you can tap Scan QR Code instead and point the camera at the QR code on the voucher, printed or on the guest’s phone.
3. Check the voucher. You’ll see who it’s for, how much is left, what it was worth to start with, when it expires, and whether it’s Active or Partially redeemed.
4. Enter the amount to take off. Amount to redeem starts with everything that’s left. To use the whole voucher, leave it. To spend part of it, change it to the bill — £32.50 on a £50 voucher, say.
5. Click Redeem. The button shows the amount, so you can check it first. You’ll then see Redeemed with the amount taken and what’s still remaining. After a few seconds the screen clears, ready for the next voucher.
In NomNom Web: More → Vouchers → Redeem. In the phone app: menu → Vouchers → Redeem.
Spending part of a voucher
Whatever you don’t take stays on the voucher, which now shows as Partially redeemed. Next time, look up the same code to see the new balance. A voucher can be spread over as many visits as the guest likes, until it runs out or expires.
You can’t take off more than is left. If the bill is bigger than the balance, redeem the whole balance and take the rest by card or cash as usual.
Rather not leave a few pence sitting on a voucher? An admin can raise the Auto-close threshold. When a redemption leaves less than that amount, the voucher is closed as fully redeemed and the guest can’t spend what was left. It starts at £0.01, so it does nothing until you change it.
In NomNom Web: account menu (top right) → Settings → Vouchers → Auto-close threshold. In the phone app: Settings → Vouchers → Auto-close threshold.
Typing the code
Codes are 16 letters and numbers. Capitals don’t matter, and spaces or dashes are left out as you type. Codes never contain the letters O, I or L or the numbers 0 or 1, so if Look up voucher stays greyed out, count the characters and check for one of those.
When a voucher won’t go through
- Voucher not found. Check the code. A voucher only works at the venue that sold it.
- This voucher has expired. Nothing can be taken off it, and the expiry date can’t be extended. To honour it anyway, sell the guest a new voucher for what was left, choosing Other under Paid by (see Selling gift vouchers in person). An admin can find what was left by searching the buyer’s name in the Sales tab; change the dates at the top if it was bought last year. The new voucher counts towards your sales totals.
- Fully redeemed, refunded or cancelled. There’s nothing left to spend.
- Too many lookups — try again in a minute. Each device can look up about ten vouchers a minute, so wait a minute and try again.
- Couldn’t reach the server. Click Retry. If the first try did go through, NomNom won’t take the amount twice.
Good to know
- Guests can’t use a voucher online. Your booking page has no voucher box, so a voucher can’t pay a deposit. Guests hand it over when they pay the bill.
- It isn’t linked to a booking. A redemption doesn’t appear in a booking’s payments or its Total paid. Admins can see each voucher’s history by clicking it in Sales.
- Codes aren’t listed anywhere. For security, NomNom never shows voucher codes in Sales, so you need the code from the guest’s voucher or email.
- Still redeemable when sales stop. Switching off Sell vouchers, or a problem with Stripe, stops new online sales, but vouchers already sold can still be redeemed until they expire.
- Who can redeem. Anyone with a Standard or Admin login. Read-only logins can look a voucher up but can’t take anything off it.
