Apple Pay and Google Pay on your booking page

When your booking page asks a guest for a card — to pay a deposit, or just to hold the booking — they can use Apple Pay or Google Pay instead of typing in their card number. A couple of taps on their phone and they’re done, which means fewer guests giving up at the payment step.

Nothing to switch on

Apple Pay and Google Pay are on for every venue that takes cards through Stripe. There’s no setting to find: as soon as Stripe confirms your account can take card payments, we set your booking page up for both automatically. That covers your booking link and, if you’re listed on NomNom Discover, the booking form on your Discover page too.

They work for both kinds of card step:

  • Deposits — the guest pays the deposit from their wallet as they book.
  • Card to hold the booking — the guest gives their card from their wallet and isn’t charged anything now.

Check you’re ready

All the wallets need is Stripe connected and fully set up. To check:

1. Open Settings. In NomNom Web, open the account menu (top right) and choose Settings, or click Settings at the bottom of the left-hand bar. In the phone app, open the menu and tap Settings.

2. Choose Stripe. It’s under PAYMENTS.

3. Look for the green tick. You want a green tick next to Card payments & deposits enabled. If you see Setup Stripe Account or Complete Stripe Setup instead, click it and finish what Stripe asks for.

NomNom Web Settings, Stripe, showing Stripe Connected and a green tick against every item on the setup checklist.

In NomNom Web: Settings → Stripe. In the phone app: Settings → Stripe.

What guests see

The wallets appear on the card step of your booking page, headed Card Details when it’s just a card to hold the booking, or Payment Details when there’s a deposit to pay. A guest whose phone or computer can use Apple Pay or Google Pay sees it offered first, ahead of the card details. The ordinary card form is always there too, so anyone can still type their card number in.

The booking page's Payment Details step on an iPhone, with Apple Pay offered first, above the card details.

Why don’t I see Apple Pay or Google Pay?

  • That booking doesn’t ask for a card. The wallets only appear on the card step, and your booking page only shows that step when one of your card or deposit rules applies to the booking — the meal, the party size and the day all have to match. For meals, the rules are under Configuration → Meals → pick a meal → Payments, in NomNom Web and the phone app alike; events have their own.
  • The guest’s phone or browser doesn’t offer one. Stripe only shows a wallet the guest can actually use on the device in front of them. Apple Pay needs an Apple device with a card in Apple Wallet; Google Pay needs Google Pay set up in their browser or on their phone. Everyone else simply sees the card form — so if you look at your booking page on a Windows laptop, don’t expect Apple Pay.
  • The form is on your own website. Stripe checks each website separately before it will show the wallets there. Your NomNom booking link is done for you, but a booking form on your own website needs a small file putting on that site first, and then we switch it on at our end. Some website builders can’t host that file — Squarespace, Wix, Shopify, GoDaddy and Google Sites among them — so there guests only see the card form. A Book a Table button through to your NomNom booking link gets the wallets back. If we host your website for you, we’ve already taken care of this. Putting the booking form on your own website has the details for your web person.
  • Stripe isn’t fully set up. Until Stripe says your account can take card payments, your booking page skips the card step altogether — so no wallets, but no deposits or cards either. Check Settings → Stripe as above.

Good to know

  • A wallet card is saved like any other. When a guest pays or gives their card with Apple Pay or Google Pay, it’s stored on the booking in just the same way as a card typed in by hand.
  • Card requests and payment links don’t offer wallets. When you send a guest a Request card or Payment link from a booking (Request Card or Send Payment Link in the phone app), the page they open takes typed-in card details only.
  • Rather not offer them? Get in touch and we’ll switch Apple Pay and Google Pay off for your venue. Your booking page then shows the card form on its own.
